What is trout conservation?
Trout conservation is the preserving and restoration of our trout populations. this could be going to you're local Michigan trout stream and planting trees next to the bank to give cover for the trout. Or even just practicing catch and release techniques. Some of those tactics would be:
1. using barbless hooks to lead to a faster release time.
2. ALWAYS wet you're hands in the water before you even touch the trout. Trout don't have scales like other species of fish. They have a protective layer of slime instead that helps to protect the trout from harmful bacteria.
3. Try to take you're hook out in the water and try to revive the trout by gently pushing him up and down the current to get water in his gills.
4. Then once you feel its time gently release him/her by letting him/her gently swim out of your hands.
Trout conservation will later lead to healthy trout populations here in Michigan and all over the U.S.
Why should I help with trout conservation?
If you love Michigan's wild life then you should help us with this motive. "Unless immediate action is taken to restore habitats and increase populations, it is likely that trout and salmon will be eliminated from large areas of the United States." (Climate Change NP). The recreational fishing activity has and will hopefully will always be a top fishing destination. we are known for our big diversity of fish. Why ruin that now. Plus the trout is such a neat animal. From the interesting designs that is unique to each one to the way they smack a caddis fly in the middle of june. The brook trout is even Michigan's state fish. Are we going to have to switch the state fish in the next decade?
Who can help?
It doesn't matter if you are a die hard fishermen like myself or not. Anyone can make a difference. There are no age restrictions for trout conservation projects. All that is required is a strong motive to conserve our local trout streams. You can even donate if you cannot make it to a project on the stream. Celeste Bott is trying to find more money for coaster brook trout conservation in our upper peninsula. "The donations would go towards the removal of the sediment that settled downstream that is covering the spawning beds of the brook trout." (bott, NP).Even just a couple of dollars could benefit our trout populations.
When can is help?
NOW. This is the time to help. We are just starting to begin to preserve and restoring our trout streams now. We need as much people and money as possible now to start seeing a difference. We intentalliy and untentally move AIS's at an fast rate (Aquatic Invasive Species, NP). Its proven that boats, felt soled waders and boots are potential AIS carriers and spread AIS species to different rivers (Aquatic Invasive Species, NP). So if you are a fishermen then you can help on your next fishing trip by cleaning you're boots and waders from AIS's. WE have to fix what we did wrong, we have to start trout conservation projects.
Where can I get involved in trout conservation?
trout conservation is the conservation of all Michigan rivers (and rest of planets). The most nearest trout conservation project is the clinton river in rochester hills mi. But any trout stream in Michigan would do. For an example: the mighty Ausable river, muskegon river, platte river, Jordan river, Boyne river and many more trout streams. There is a coaster brook trout conservation project going on right now in mi upper peninsula. "The majority of that watershed is surrounded by dirt roads and steep terrain" he said "it may not look like a problem on a sunny day, but when it rains, It can hemorrhage tons of sediment, which covers the coaster brook trouts eggs."(bott, NP). They need more donations to make a machine would help to pump sand out of the river. projects like these need the most donations and help from us.
